Like the nearby Hovhannavank Monastery, Saghmosavank is located above a high gorge near the Kasakh River. The Church of Sion in this monastery (1215), and the Church of St. Karapet in Hovhannavank (1216–1235) were founded by Prince Vache Vachutyan of Ayrarat. They belong to the same type, which has a luxurious cross and high domes. The temples have several domes, which is reflected from the outside.
