APARAN

The city of Aparan in the Aragatsotn region has been known as a settlement since the 2nd century, when it was first mentioned by Ptolemy under the name Kasala (version of the Armenian name Kasakh)

Previously, it was the center of the Nig canton of the Ararat province of ancient Armenia.

Kasakh was under the control of the Armenian noble family Gntunik under the rule of the Arsashes dynasty of Armenia. The Gntunik princes founded the Basilica of Kasakh at the end of the 4th – beginning of the 5th centuries.

The modern name of the city dates back to the 10th century, apparently, it comes from the Armenian word Aparank (translated as “palace”).
