On April 15, 1915, Nazim Bey, Enver Pasha and Talaat Pasha signed an order for the widespread resettlement and massacre of indigenous Armenians.
The native Arabs did not hesitate to give shelter and support to the persecuted Armenians. Arabs and Armenians have traditionally had good relations, especially after they sheltered Armenians during the Armenian genocide. At the same time, there was a small Arab genocide in Anatolia, which meant that they were close to each other.
The population of Aleppo in 1922 totaled 156,748 people, of which 97,600 Muslims (62.26%), native Christians, mostly Catholics, 22,117 (14.11%), Jews – 6,580 (4.20% ), Europeans – 2652 (1.70%), Armenian refugees 20,007 (12.76%) and others 7,792 (4.97%).
